Carrie MeakinYears In The Sport
Since 2002Sporting background: Swam like a fish for fun as a kid, would stay in the lake all day, best stroke: man from Atlantis swimming. Played volleyball and basketball in high school and basketball in college. Had a short time trying to be bodybuilder and then had a business, had kids and pretty much no actual exercise, until I decided to do a triathlon.
Why I do triathlon: Initially I decided to try it because I did not feel like I was good at any of the three disciplines, but I could do enough to get by and I figured my stubbornness would be enough to slog through three different things. I felt like a rockstar when I came in second last in my first attempt, it was Frank Dunn in Waskesui and I was on my husband’s mountain bike(he is 6’1”).
I stuck with it and every year did a bit more training and learning, still keeping pretty much to myself. I have always felt great during training and on race day with very little injury (this tends to happen when you never leave your comfort zone—haha). I have been thinking about kicking it up a notch for awhile and this year seemed like the perfect year to break out of my comfort zone and see what I got under the hood.
It is very important to me to show my kids and especially my daughter, how great exercise can make you feel, to set and reach goals and to have something for yourself despite life’s craziness.
Triathlon Accomplishments:
- Frank Dunn finisher 6 times
- Stony Plain half ironman two time finisher
- completed one full marathon
- a couple Olympic distance and sprint races
Triathlon Goals: I want to finish Ironman Canada 2010 upright, smiling and knowing I gave my very best I had on the day. I would like to work on my speed for shorter distances. I would like to shave ½ hour off my stony plain bike time----this should not be hard as my bike training pre-Carrie has been laughable!!!
Additional Comments: I love that this year will be full of firsts and I am excited (and slightly frightened) to be working with Carrie!!!!!
