Coach Carrie Matsumoto
Head coach, co-founder owner Mercury Rising Triathlon Carrie Matsumoto has over 10 years of triathlon coaching experience. Carrie fell in love with the sport on her way to becoming a podium-level age-group triathlete. Her prior experience as an athlete, combined with her university degrees in Science and Education, and countless years of teaching swimming and running have molded her natural approach and enable her to bring out the very best in each of the athletes she works with.
Some of Carrie's coaching highlights include: World Championship and Boston qualifiers, race wins, age-group podiums, Ironman time improvements of over 3.5 hours, as well as helping complete beginners compete at every distance.
In addition to working with individual athletes across the globe, also does some group sessions in her hometown of Calgary, Alberta.
I was coached by Carrie Matsumoto through to completion of the 2013 edition of Challenge Penticton (formerly Ironman Canada). Two years in the making, it would not have been possible without the expert guidance of my coach. She provided customized daily workouts, encouragement when my willpower flagged and instruction when my technique was failing (especially swimming). Best of all I felt that my efforts were important to her; she cared enough to be at the finish line, with her newborn daughter, to welcome me home.- Ken Bagan
I discovered triathlon and started working with Carrie Matsumoto in 2012. Carrie is an outstanding triathlon coach and an amazing person! She has helped me shape a sustainable active lifestyle that fits with my busy family life and demanding career. Mercury Rising offers more than a triathlon training schedule. Carrie has overhauled my approach to training, race nutrition, injury prevention, tapering, equipment selection as well as my mindset towards competing.- Markus Navikenas
